Akash Deep: The Unyielding Spirit of India’s Rising Fast Bowling Star

When Akash Deep marked his run-up for India during the gripping fourth Test against England in Ranchi (February 2024), it was more than a cricketing debut. It was the culmination of a journey forged through resilience, sacrifice, and an unwavering love for the game. Born in Dehri, Bihar, on December 15, 1996, this right-arm fast bowler and handy lower-order batter embodies the dreams of countless aspiring cricketers from India’s heartland.

Against All Odds: A Childhood Fueled by Passion
Akash’s path was never straightforward. Growing up in Sasaram, Bihar, he faced fierce opposition from his parents and community for prioritizing cricket over academics. His father, Ramji Singh, a government school teacher, urged him toward stable careers—like the Bihar police constable exams or a Class IV peon position. The suspension of the Bihar Cricket Association left young talents like Akash without a platform, isolating him as the sole cricket-obsessed boy in his town. Neighbors even warned children against mingling with him, fearing he’d inspire them to abandon studies.

Tragedy struck twice within six months: the sudden deaths of his father and elder brother. At just 19, Akash became the sole breadwinner for his mother and two sisters. Cricket, once a passion, now held the weight of his family’s survival.

The Kolkata Crucible: Forging a Career
Relocating to Kolkata, West Bengal, a friend helped him join a cricket club in Durgapur. To support his family, Akash played tennis-ball matches, earning ₹600 daily (roughly ₹20,000 monthly). This gritty hustle kept his dream alive. He later joined United Club in the prestigious CAB first division league (2010), transitioning from a batsman to a fast bowler as his height increased. Mentored by former Bengal paceman Ranadeb Bose under India’s Vision 2020 programme, he swiftly earned a spot in the Bengal U-23 cricket team.

career-threatening back injury soon tested him again. Under the guidance of Bengal U-23 head coach Sourasish Lahiri, Akash underwent rigorous rehabilitation, showcasing the tenacity that defines his story.

Domestic & IPL Ascent: Proving His Mettle
Akash’s domestic career for Bengal began in earnest:

  • Twenty20 debut2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (March 2019)

  • List A debut2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy (September 2019)

  • First-class debut2019–20 Ranji Trophy (December 2019)

His raw pace caught the eye of IPL scouts. In 2021, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) signed him for the UAE leg of the Indian Premier League. Retained by RCB for 2022, he honed his skills alongside cricket’s elite. A standout performance came during India A’s tour games against England Lions, where his eleven scalps—including two four-wicket hauls—signaled his readiness for the highest level.

The International Breakthrough
National call-ups followed:

  • Named in India’s squad for the 2022 Asian Games, replacing injured Shivam Mavi.

  • Selected as Deepak Chahar’s injury replacement for the ODI series against South Africa (November 2023).

But the pinnacle arrived in February 2024: a maiden Test call-up for the home series against England. The news reached him mid-match during the 2023–24 Ranji Trophy, a poetic full-circle moment for the boy from Sasaram.

The Legacy in the Making
Akash Deep’s journey—from Bihar’s dusty grounds to the hallowed turf of Test cricket—is a testament to relentless perseverance. Today, he dons the India cap with pride, represents Bengal domestically, shines for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, and stars for the Servotech Siliguri Strikers in the Bengal Pro T20 League. His story isn’t just about cricket; it’s about triumphing over despair, honoring lost loved ones, and inspiring a generation to chase their dreams, no matter the odds.
