Sir Paul McCartney, one of the most legendary songwriters in music history, has revealed that one of his songs was inspired by none other than Taylor Swift.

Known for writing timeless hits for The Beatles, his solo career, and other artists, McCartney continues to be celebrated across generations. But even a music genius like him finds inspiration in modern stars — and Swift is at the top of that list.

McCartney’s 2018 song “Who Cares?”, from his 17th studio album Egypt Station, was directly influenced by Taylor Swift and her close connection with her young fans. In an interview with the BBC, McCartney shared, “I was actually thinking about Taylor Swift and her relationship to her young fans — it’s sort of a sisterly thing. I imagined talking to one of them and asking, ‘Have you ever been bullied?’”

The song, which blends rock and R&B, even features Emma Stone — Swift’s longtime friend — in its music video, adding another link to the pop star.

But the admiration isn’t one-sided. Taylor Swift has often spoken about how deeply McCartney’s music has influenced her. “I discovered his music as a kid and bought every Beatles and Paul McCartney CD I could find,” Swift once said. “He writes about love and life in such a beautifully simple way — it’s like being invited into his heart and mind.”

Swift, who has also drawn inspiration from other icons like Carly Simon, credits artists like Simon for shaping her own fearless storytelling style. In a 2015 Rolling Stone interview, she said Simon’s hit “You’re So Vain” opened a “forbidden area of storytelling” for her — the freedom to write boldly about real emotions and relationships.

Interestingly, music fans believe that Simon’s influence echoes through Swift’s biggest breakup songs, including “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “Better Man,” “How Did It End?”, and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.”

Even Simon herself has praised Swift, calling her “the perfect artist for this century — born for the job.”

From one songwriting legend to another, McCartney and Swift’s mutual admiration proves that great music truly transcends generations.
