Lucknow’s Pride Takes Flight
Born and raised in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (affectionately known as “Shux”) embodies the spirit of modern India’s scientific ambition. His journey began at City Montessori School, Aliganj, where academic excellence laid the groundwork for an extraordinary destiny. Inspired by the 1999 Kargil War, the young Shukla independently conquered the UPSC NDA examination, later graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the National Defence Academy in 2005.
Soaring with the Indian Air Force
Commissioned as a Flying Officer in June 2006 after training at the Indian Air Force Academy, Shukla rapidly ascended as a combat leader and seasoned test pilot. With 2,000+ flying hours across elite aircraft—including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier 228, and An-32—he honed precision and resilience in the skies.
The Call of the Cosmos
In 2019, the Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) selected Shukla for India’s Human Spaceflight Programme. After rigorous evaluation, he joined the final four astronauts shortlisted by IAM and ISRO. His training spanned continents: foundational cosmonaut skills at Russia’s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (2020–2021), advanced modules at ISRO’s Astronaut Training Facility in Bangalore, and a Master of Technology in Aerospace Engineering from IISc Bangalore.
A Historic Revelation
On 27 February 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi electrified the nation by announcing Shukla as a crew member for India’s first human space mission at ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. The moment cemented his place in history.
Axiom Mission 4: India’s Giant Leap
As the pilot of Axiom Mission 4 (launched 25 June 2025 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida), Shukla etched his name among legends. His crew—commanded by Peggy Whitson, with specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski and Tibor Kapu—symbolizes global collaboration between NASA, SpaceX, and ISRO. Fellow ISRO astronaut Prasanth Nair served as backup, with both training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Houston.
Moments after reaching orbit, Shukla’s voice echoed across India:
“What a ride! Namaskar mere pyare Deshvasiyo… This is not my journey alone—it’s the dawn of India’s human spaceflight programme. Wear your pride; let’s soar together. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!”
(Economic Times, 25 June 2025)
As the first Indian astronaut on the ISS and second Indian in orbit (after Rakesh Sharma), his mission—funded at ~₹500 crores (mid-$60-million)—marks a quantum leap for international spaceflight cooperation.
The Man Behind the Mission
Shukla’s roots remain anchored in Lucknow. Married to Dr. Kamna Mishra (a dentist and his schoolmate), he is a devoted father to their son. His parents—Shambhu Dayal Shukla (retired government officer) and Asha Shukla (homemaker)—watch proudly as their youngest child orbits Earth.
An avid fitness enthusiast and reader of science books, Shukla balances analytical rigor with curiosity—exploring astrophotography and even horoscopes, despite identifying as an agnostic.
